Dr. Ahlskog’s first edition published some ten years ago has been the most comprehensive, understandable and useful text I have found for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Until now. The updated and expanded "New" Parkinson’s disease treatment book replaces its predecessor as the pre-eminent desk reference to help the lay person manage life with PD. As a support group leader with Parkinson’s, it is the first book on a short list that I recommend to newly diagnosed individuals looking for educational resources.

The author discusses the myriad of symptoms, both motor and non-motor, that make Parkinson’s disease such a complex condition to definitively diagnose and effectively treat. Each patient offers a unique challenge for the medical specialist, who seeks to prescribe an assortment of drugs and/or surgical interventions to address the symptomatic conditions presented with the greatest possible efficacy. While noting that the proper treatment of symptoms will improve the patient’s quality of life, we learn that none of the drugs or surgical options currently available will slow its progression. That’s where exercise may help. A regular and somewhat rigorous exercise routine will not only improve the patient’s current well being but is likely to increase functionality and longevity as well.

Dr. Ahlskog writes in a style that is clear, thorough, and easy to understand for those of us without a medical background. Drawing on his many years of helping patients at the Mayo Clinic, be infuses his dialogue with the reader with a comfortable bedside manner. Add to that a good glossary and a detailed index that is easily referenced by subject matter across chapters as conditions change over time.
